Summer is quickly approaching in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, which means warmer weather, longer days, and many adventure opportunities. From world-class museums to outdoor concerts and festivals, there are endless possibilities for entertainment and exploration in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia to take advantage of this time of year. Whether you're a local or new to living in the area, here are some places to go and things to do to have the most fun in the DC Metro area this summer.
The Smithsonian Institution is a must-visit attraction for anyone spending time in D.C. With 19 different museums and galleries to choose from, you can select what interests you most or make an adveture out of visiting all 19. From the Air and Space Museum to the National Museum of Natural History, each museum offers a unique experience for interests of all ages. The best part of it all? Admission is free for everyone! A gem of the Smithsonian Institution, the National Zoo is a perfect place to spend a summer day. Home to over 2,700 animals representing nearly 400 species, it’s a great way to learn about some of the world's most fascinating creatures. This summer, the zoo is showcasing its exotic birds with a show called "Birds in Flight," where you can get a close-up look as they fly right over you! Highlights also include the giant pandas, tigers, and the daily animal demos that give you a look into how the zookeepers interact with different animals.
Located on the waterfront, The Wharf is a bustling destination for food, entertainment, and shopping. With over 20 restaurants, bars, and cafes, there's something for every palate. Some of our favorite spots include Hank’s Oyster Bar for seafood, 12 Stories Bar for drinks, and Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream for dessert. Take a stroll along the pier, rent a paddleboard, or catch a concert at The Anthem, an acclaimed music venue. Want to head to Georgetown or Old Town Alexandria? Hop on the Wharf Water Taxi to soak in the sunshine and views from the water.
No visit to DC is complete without a tour of the iconic monuments and memorials. From the Lincoln Memorial to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, these landmarks are a powerful reminder of our nation's history. Take a guided tour or explore at your own pace. Take a walk around the Tidal Basin and admire the gorgeous landscape. The Tidal Basin is a man-made reservoir located between the Washington Channel and the Potomac River where thousands of people flock to see the cherry blossom trees in bloom. The Tidal Basin is also home to several memorials, including those honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Located just across the Potomac River in Maryland, National Harbor is a waterfront destination with shops, restaurants, and entertainment. Take a ride on the Capital Wheel, a 180-foot Ferris wheel with stunning views of the capital, enjoy a lobster roll at Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls or sing along at Bobby Mckey’s Dueling Piano Bar.
Catch a baseball game at Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals. With great views of the Capitol and the Anacostia River, the stadium is a perfect summer destination. Be sure to try a famous Ben's Chili Bowl half-smoke, a D.C. favorite. Buy your tickets here!
The nation's capital puts on an impressive display of fireworks over the National Mall on Independence Day. The National Mall is home to iconic monuments and is flanked by Smithsonian museums, leaving plenty of options to explore the area on this exciting day. Are you a history buff? Head to the National Archives to meet George and Martha Washington re-enactors, listen to a reading of the Declaration of Independence, and much more.
Located just outside of D.C. in Vienna, Virginia, Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts is a unique outdoor venue for concerts, dance performances, and more. Musicians like John Legend, Charlie Puth, and the Steve Miller Band will all be performing in the month of June! Pack a picnic, grab your tickets, and enjoy a show under the stars.
Explore the historic streets of Georgetown, a charming neighborhood known for its shopping, dining, and nightlife. One of our favorite spots, Georgetown Cupcake, has its own show on TLC that highlights the success of its cupcakery! With plenty of outdoor cafes and charming boutiques, Georgetown is the perfect place to spend a summer afternoon.
