Buying an Area Rug for Your Apartment

Adding a new rug to your apartment can definitely take your decor up a notch. Besides being pretty, area rugs are useful at keeping your carpet or floors cleaner. They are ideal to use underneath dining tables, couches, or anywhere else people tend to gather with food and drinks.

If you have carpet in your apartment, an area rug can be especially helpful in keeping your carpet clean so you’ll be sure to get your deposit back.

To get started, you’ll want to decide where in your apartment you need a rug and then measure the space to see how big of rug you have room for. You’ll need this information when you go shopping for a rug.

In general rugs are not cheap – and they can get really expensive depending on what kind of rug you’re looking for. You’ll definitely want to shop around and compare prices online. If you can see it in person before purchasing, that’s even better. Remember this is something you’ll be walking on day in and day out. You want to make sure it not only looks pretty, but is comfortable on your bare feet.

There are many different types of rug materials out there that you should consider as well when you’re picking your rug:

  • Wool – Very high-quality rugs that last a lifetime and are often passed down from generation to generation. They keep their color well, are easy to remove stains from and can be used in high traffic areas.
  • Cotton – Less expensive than wool, but still using a natural fiber, cotton rugs don’t have high durability. However, if you’re on a budget, this is a good option.
  • Bamboo – These textured rugs have a more casual vibe so they definitely fit into certain decor niches and aren’t very versatile. That being said, if you need a rug, they’re more affordable than others.
  • Synthetic Materials – These rugs can be designed to mimic the classic wool rug and are a less expensive option. They’re not as high quality and may not last an entire lifetime, but may be a good option for your apartment home.

Stick to these tips and you’ll find a beautiful rug that’s perfect for your apartment!
