8 Spices & Herbs Every Kitchen Should Have

August 25, 2022

It's not always practical or economical to use the fresh versions of your favorite herbs and spices, but that's why they make dried ones! These are the 8 spices and herbs every kitchen should have so your life will never be without flavor. Once you have the spices on hand, it's easy to expand your culinary repertoire.

8 Spices & Herbs Every Kitchen Should Have

Garlic Powder

Garlic powder gives you the powerful flavor of garlic without the mess of peeling and chopping it fresh.

Dried Oregano

Earthy and aromatic, oregano is a staple of Italian, Mexican, and Mediterranean cooking. Need we say more? You definitely want this in your pantry because the dried version is actually commonly preferred over the fresh option.

Dried Basil

Dried basil is a tricky because it doesn't closely ressemble the flavor of its fresh counterpart. However, that doesn't mean it isn't a great addition to punch up the flavor of soups, sauces, and more.

Crushed Red Pepper

Red pepper flakes are the absolute easiest way to add some heat to any dish. You can also swap it for Cayenne pepper, which is made from ground red chile peppers and brings heat but in a more concentrated way.

Ground Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a sneaky spice. Many won't suspect this, but it's found in both sweet and savory dishes. Its versatility makes it a kitchen must have. Step up your spice game by adding Nutmeg as a complement.

Dried Thyme

Thyme pairs excellently with poultry and seafood thanks to its earthy, minty, and even slightly lemony flavor.

That complex, almost musky flavor in curry that you just can't place? That's turmeric. Turmeric's flavor is as remarkable as its color, so it's easy to spot in the spice aisle.

Nutty and earthy, cumin is a staple in many types of cuisines. Because it's common across cultures, it's great to have on hand as a pantry staple.

Perhaps this goes without saying, but... don't forget the basics! If nothing else, salt and pepper are a must when it comes to stocking your kitchen.
